Annotated lyrics

Mumford & Sons- White Blank Page

Can you lie next to her

And give her your heart, your heart

As well as your body?

He cannot fully give her his heart as his heart now belongs to the drugs. His body is no longer under his control as the drugs now has power over his body.

And can you lie next to her

And confess your love, your love

As well as your folly?

Questioning his love for her after being taken over by the effects of the drugs.

And can you kneel before the king

And say I’m clean, I’m clean?

Lying to himself that he is not addicted yet cannot stop himself from using the drugs. Doesn’t want to believe it.

But tell me now, where was my fault?

In loving you with my whole heart

Oh, tell me now where was my fault?

In loving you with my whole heart

Trying to say that although he gave her his all but it wasn’t enough for her and he turned to drugs. He gave her everything, which turned out to be his downfall.

A white blank page and a swelling rage, rage

You did not think when you sent me to the brink, the brink

You desired my attention

But denied my affections, affections

She didn’t realize what she was doing by not paying him as much as attention as he required. It becomes apparent that the relationship was quite one sided as he loved her more than she loved him.

So tell me now, where was my fault?

In loving you with my whole heart

Oh, tell me now where was my fault?

In loving you with my whole heart

Lead me to the truth and I

Will follow you with my whole life

Oh, lead me to the truth and I

Will follow you with my whole life

She is the only one who can help him through this and get him past his drug habit. She can lead him away from this alternative lifestyle he has chosen and set him on the right path again.
